Joe Biden’s calls for “unity” might sound reassuring, but political harmony is usually an ugly, authoritarian goal that undermines the entire purpose of a free nation and “democracy.” Other than occasional moments of national tragedy or exultation, we don’t need it. Unity is for dictatorships. In an ideologically, culturally, and religiously diverse country, we just need Americans to accept that their neighbors are going to disagree with them.

And, yes, appeals to “unity” have historically been little more than euphemistic calls to accept left-wing cultural mores. One never achieves “unity” in American politics by respecting socially conservative values. One does so by finally opening his closed mind and soul to ever-evolving progressive standards.

Recall the pseudo-patriotic “unity” sloganeering and accompanying hero worship surrounding Barack Obama. When the late Rush Limbaugh — on whom Democrats had once blamed the Oklahoma City bombing — had the audacity to say he wanted Obama to “fail,” it became a national story. Then came the wave of feigned anger about his lack of patriotism. Because Democrats would be, of course, clamoring for Donald Trump to succeed, right?

Many of us wanted Obama to fail because his ideas undermined the constitutional order and important norms in America. Why would anyone unify around the idea that we need to “change” our foundational principles? To be fair, those on the left don’t really view their positions as being partisan. It’s all just good, moral common sense.

Three law enforcement officers were stationed inside the building where a gunman shot former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally Saturday.

Two days after the failed assassination attempt, BeaverCountian.com reported that an officer confirmed “there were three counter-snipers” stationed underneath the same roof where the assailant blew off part of President Trump’s right ear. Officers notified the “command center” about the threat before the gunman fatally shot a rallygoer and injured three others, including the Republican presidential nominee.

“A Beaver County police officer warned a command center of seeing a man with a rangefinder before former President Donald Trump was shot on Saturday,” reported the website. “The officer had also warned the man was scoping out the roof of the building he was stationed in as a counter-sniper, and that the man returned with a backpack before ultimately scaling the building.”

According to CBS, law enforcement even took a picture of him before the gunfire.

“Contrary to reports in national news outlets, officers say the building just outside the security perimeter established by Secret Service was in fact occupied by law enforcement,” added BeaverCountian.com.

Federalist CEO Sean Davis summed up the situation on X: “Who gave the order to do nothing until after the assassin shot Trump, killed an innocent man on that stage, and fired round after round after round after round?”

UPDATE: A representative of Jack Black reached out Tuesday to offer a statement after the comedian’s bandmate joked about Saturday’s assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. Black said “all future creative plans are on hold.”

“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” Black said in the statement. “After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Black, who has endorsed President Joe Biden, burst into laughter Sunday night after “Tenacious D” bandmate Kyle Gass joked about the assassination attempt against Trump.

Black sang “Happy Birthday” and presented a birthday cake to Gass during a Sydney, Australia, performance. Video footage posted to X shows what happened next.

“Make a wish,” Black said after the song.

“Don’t miss Trump next time,” Gass responded.

Applause and laughter erupted from the crowd while Black also laughed at the joke.

This happened one night after a gunman attempted to assassinate the former president, shooting him in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shot also killed a rally attendee and injured others.
